Former national basketball player John Mane has commended the Solomon Islands Basketball Federation (SIBF) for their effort in trying to revive the sport of basketball in the country.
Mane, who is also the coach of the QQQ Marist team in Honiara’s amateur basketball league said yesterday, that it was encouraging to see the federation step up and take the initiative of supporting basketball clubs as well.
Team QQQ Marist became one of the first clubs this year to receive the donated equipments from SIBF and world basketball governing body FIBA.
The equipments which were brought over earlier this month are now finding their way to schools, basketball clubs and the national teams, and according to Mane this is a positive sign for the sport.
“I’ve been coaching the Marist team for a long time and this is the first gift the federation has ever given to the club” Mane said.
“This is encouraging and a step forward for basketball in the country”.
The donated equipments were handed over by basketball volunteer Lisa Wini who is working towards distributing them to all Honiara clubs on behalf of the federation.
Wini said SIBF are giving away mostly basketballs for affiliated clubs to use during their training sessions.
She said most of the other equipments will be used by the federation to run competitions for this year.
In his final response Mane congratulated SIBF and gave his team’s support behind their work.
“We now have a direction and I would like to congratulate the federation, and show our appreciation and continued support through out this year”, Mane said.
