The Solomon Islands Basketball Federation has released the names of the players selected for the All Star Tournament. The tournament is scheduled to start this weekend on the 1st of November 2009.
A spokesperson for the Federation said, "I believe we have a great set of All Stars. The team of selectors have debated the selections over a period of time and have settled for those that have been put on the list." "Players are also selected based on their place of residence not on the location of their training facilities. So all players on the east side of Mataniko River are on the East and those to the West of Mataniko form the West Honiara All Stars."
The teams will be coached by Don Boykin and Willie Sade. The East Honiara All Stars have already entered their second week of training and another training is scheduled for Wednesday 28th October 2009 at 5pm, Honiara Multipurpose Hall. No word has come from the West Honiara All Stars but sources confirm that the West Honiara All Stars are ready to spring on a surprise come game time.
The Federation also revealed that due to rising cost of hiring the Honiara Multipurpose Hall the midweek game in the series will be shifted to another Sunday. "The new dates are set for the 1st, 8th & 15th of November 2009 because it will be very expensive to host a game on Wednesday as previously planned." The Federation is also concerned that there is little incentive from the Honiara City Council for sports federations that are non profit organizations to use the facilities. "We finally settled on an affordable deal but the long term use of the hall will become a very big expenditure and the Federation will have difficulties sustaining that in its budget."
